What is SQL Server Agent?

SQL Server Agent is a SQL Server Service which runs job. It runs the scheduled jobs and creates other related information.
While expanding management section in SQL Server management studio you can see SQL Server Agent. You have to start SQL Server agent service before using it. SQL Server agent can provide you alerts of job failures.
